Matisyahu hopes to be more than 'Hasidic reggae superstar'

Shedding disguises, or at least outer garments, is one of the inspirations for his new album, "Spark Seeker," selections of which he will perform Tuesday at House of Blues in Houston. [...] when he talks about collaborating on "Spark Seeker," which he recorded in Los Angeles and Israel with producer KoOol kOojAk (Allan Grigg), Matis sounds just like a music writer. The "darker, edgier" quality of the songs recorded in Israel balance the "upbeat, uplifting" songs from L.A., he says. The "outer garment" that he shed when he cut his beard, a staple of male attire in the Hasidic community, was a relic of a particular time and place - Brooklyn, N.Y., where he once lived, says Matis, who now lives in L.A. Chabad's approach is to encourage people to stick to a particular path in order to find what they are seeking, he says. Matis' "Jerusalem" music video turned Motte, the director of online programs at Houston Baptist University, into a fan.
