It is five years since Butcombe opened this contemporary pub and bar on the site of the former Smiles Brewery Tap.
Popular with hospital staff and students, Colston Yard comprises three separate areas for drinkers, with the main area at the rear being more geared towards diners.
As befits a brewery owned pub, beer is the main focus here, but it is by no means restricted to Butcombe's own brews.
Although Butcombe Bitter, Mendip Spring and Gold were all on draught when I visited, there were also two guest ales – Timothy Taylor Landlord and the Fuller's Jubilee ale Hope and Glory.
As well as real ale, there is draught Anchor Steam, 5am Saint, Duvel, Pilsner Urquell, Veltins, San Miguel, Amstel and Guinness, plus Ashton Press and Ashton Still for cider drinkers.
But it is the vast range of bottled beers that really impresses here.
There are more than 50 to choose from and they represent all corners of the beer-producing world.
There's James Boag's Premium Lager from Tasmania, Einstok White Ale Witbier from Iceland and Samichlaus Bier Doppelbock from Austria, alongside several from America, Germany and Belgium.
If you are in search of something even stronger, there are more than 20 whiskies and single malts to choose from.
Wine drinkers have a concise list but all wines are available by the glass or bottle. The mid-week "Wine Lovers' Wednesdays" offer means you can purchase two large glasses of any wine and get the rest of the bottle free.
There is an equally large choice of food on offer, from light bites, sandwiches and burgers to main meals. An emphasis on local suppliers means that Newton Farm steaks and Cornish fish and seafood make an appearance.
A specials board on the evening I was there included chicken curry and moules mariniere, although the Butcombe beer- battered fish, chips and mushy peas appeared to be one of the biggest sellers.
