Colour Guard is on to a winner

COLOUR Guard takes a step into the unknown, but is worth a shout in the Breathe Spa At Lingfield Marriott Handicap today.

Mark Johnston's charge has so far been confined to the Southwell Fibresand and faces a different test as he tackles the Polytrack surface at the Surrey venue. But the four-year-old merits the utmost respect after winning three of his four starts at Southwell.

Victorious on his racecourse bow in February, his sole disappointment came when he could muster only fourth on his handicap debut later that month.

However, a slow start put him on the back foot that day and he duly made amends by running out a three-length winner at the start of the month.

Colour Guard has since gone in again and, while he has to contend with a 10lb rise and a new racing surface, he looks a thoroughly progressive animal.

Zain Princess put two poor juvenile efforts behind her with a win on her three-year-old debut and she is the choice in the Dine In The Horizons Restaurant Handicap at Wolverhampton.

While she only won a seller at Dunstall Park, Zain Princess was clearly head and shoulders above her rivals and looked excellent value for the official two-and-a- half-length verdict. She really did not beat much that day, but an initial mark of 61 should be competitive enough here.

John Flint had hoped to run Grams And Ounces in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham and. while that plan did not quite work out, compensation awaits at Newbury.

Winner of three races since joining Flint's team late last year, Grams And Ounces has jumped 20lb in the ratings after successes at Hereford, Leicester and Ludlow.

The five-year-old was last seen when winning at Ludlow back in January and, although he had to work reasonably hard on that occasion, it was a third run in quick succession.

Given a nice break since then, Grams And Ounces can maintain his winning partnership with 7lb claimer Thomas Flint in the Betfair. Don't Settle For Less Handicap Hurdle.

Cheltenham did not exactly pan out for Roulez Cool either, but he can get back on track in the Betfair Lambourn Open Day 6th April Hunters' Chase.

Winner of Stratford's Champion Hunters' Chase back in 2010, Roulez Cool was sidelined until making his return to action in the Foxhunter last Friday.

Trainer Robert Waley-Cohen has not abandoned hopes of running him in the Grand National and victory here would surely place him in the mix for the Aintree feature.
