Bristol's Steve Brown suffers first-round World Darts Championship defeat to Terry Jenkins

STEVE Brown suffered a first-round defeat at the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship this afternoon, as he went down 3-0 to Terry Jenkins at Alexandra Palace.

Bristolian Brown, who recorded his first ever televised victory over Jenkins in Blackpool in 2010, was unable to repeat that feat as the world No 9 bossed proceedings throughout, finishing with an average of 94.31.

Brown, in comparison, threw one 180 and averaged 86.12 as he went down 3-0, 3-1, 3-2 to suffer an opening-round exit at the £1 million tournament for the second year running.

"The first set was very important, and I thought that if I could win that, it would have been in my hands and the confidence would have been there," said Brown. "But, to be fair to Terry, he played well, so I can't have too many complaints."

Brown was spurred on by 70 children from his three darts academies in the Bristol area, but fell behind when Jenkins, aided by a 180, took the first leg on throw.

Brown then missed one dart at tops to level the match, only for Jenkins to take out 60 for a 2-0 lead, before 'The Bull' wrapped up the opening set with a 17-dart leg as Brown missed two further darts at double.

Brown got his first leg on the board when he checked out 76 in the first leg of the second set, only for Jenkins to go out in 13 darts to draw level. Another 13-dart leg, this time against the throw, saw Jenkins into a 2-1 lead, before he wrapped up the set in the next leg.

A 14-dart leg saw Jenkins take a 1-0 lead in the third set, before the Bristol man held his throw in 16 darts to draw level. Jenkins then edged ahead, only for Brown – who opened the fourth leg with throws of 100, 140 and 140 – to make it 2-2.

But Jenkins held his nerve on his own throw to win the third set 3-2 and progress to the last 32, leaving Brown to reflect on a disappointing 2012.
